AT&T to Get 3G PlayBook This Spring, LTE to Follow

BGR: reports that a new rumor has a merged today, that RIM is working on a 3G version of their BlackBerry PlayBook.

According to this source, a high-level BlackBerry administrator who works closely with Research In Motion (RIM) and who wishes to remain anonymous due to a non-disclosure agreement, a cell-enabled (3G) PlayBook is expected be available in late March or early April. The source also says he expects an LTE PlayBook “some time soon” after the release of the 3G PlayBook.

To date, RIM has announced a Wi-Fi only version of the BlackBerry PlayBook with a rough release date of first quarter 2011, or before the end of March. Sprint also said it plans to release a 4G WiMax BlackBerry PlayBook some time this summer.

But we’ve yet to hear anything official about a 3G BlackBerry PlayBook, or an LTE version, on any wireless carrier.

BlackBerry Bold 2(9700) Being Replaced by BlackBerry Bold 2.5(9780)

Just got word over at thecellularguru.com that AT&T is no longer offering the BlackBerry Bold 9700 to customer.  I checked the website and it was there but when you click on the add to cart the site kicks you back to the home screen.  I went to the store here between 41st and 5th avenue and they didn’t have it in the store.  Could this mean that AT&T is getting the BlackBerry Bold 2.5(9780).

Showing off the BlackBerry Dakota/Magnum Prototype from Febraury 2010com

Back in February, 2010 I came cross this video from TheCellularGuru, which at the time the BlackBerry device was called the Magnum.  As we all know it’s called the BlackBerry Dakota. The BlackBerry Dakota which will have a touchscreen and Full QWERTY Keyboard hybrid device and its nearest cousins, the Bold 9000 and 9700.  Notably, the narrator points out that the phone shares its keyboard design more closely with the 9000 than the 9700 — for aficionados, this can be a crucial difference — and it generally shares its physical cues with the older Bold apart from a move to micro-USB (and the SurePress screen, of course). Sadly, the proto here lacks an operating system so there’s not terribly much to see beyond the hardware itself, but it might all be for naught — the latest intel suggests that this phone has been supplanted by a mysterious “Dakota” with updated specs, so we’ll just have to hang on to our Curves and Storms for a little while longer.
