BlackBerry AppWorld 2.1 for AU and NA BetaZone Subscribers

I have just received notification from the BlackBerry Beta Zone letting em know I was invited to participate in the BlackBerry App World 2.1 beta program. BlackBerry App World 2.1 is an update to Appworld 2.0 of course.  Here is what new in 2.1:

In-app Payments

App World 2.1 includes support for in-app payments.  How does this change the way you interact with certain paid applications as a developer or as a consumer?

From a developer’s standpoint…Let’s assume that you’ve come up with this cool idea for a bunch of new levels in a game you’ve created.  With this version of App World you can now charge a fee for those additional levels, while giving users the chance to purchase them directly from within your application! Better yet, we’ll let you seamlessly integrate your application with existing App World payment services to make the purchasing process as easy and secure as possible for your customers.

From a consumer’s standpoint…So you’ve finished the final level of a really sweet game and you’re longing for some more levels to keep you occupied on the subway ride home.  You then open the app again and realize that some extra levels are available for purchase!  You now have the ability to purchase those additional levels seamlessly within the application itself by using the existing purchasing options offered by App World!  All you have to do is punch in your BlackBerry ID and a couple of clicks later you’re back at it.

Please note that there aren’t any applications that take advantage of in-app payments just yet – as soon as a couple of them appear in the App World catalogue, we’ll be sure to let our beta testers know.

Filtered Featured Items

Once you open this latest version of App World, you’ll notice that Featured Items are seemingly more relevant to you.  Well, we decided to change this functionality based on the feedback we received from you during the App World 2.0 Beta Program.  Featured Items are now filtered by carrier, country, device and OS to ensure that you are presented with the most relevant apps as soon as you open App World.

Extended BBID Login Session

We heard what you had to say during the App World 2.0 Beta Program last summer and decided to make some changes to the BBID functionality in App World.  With this latest release, a single BBID login session lasts for 20 minutes, making it easier for you to download and install as many apps as you’d like in one go.  Please remember that during the 20 minute BBID login session,  you will not be prompted again for your BlackBerry ID to complete a purchase.  If your BlackBerry smartphone gets in the hands of someone else, they could make a purchase that you’re not aware of.
